New Research Study Explores the Real‑World Impact of Acanthamoeba Keratitis
May 2026
Acanthamoeba Keratitis (AK) is a rare but devastating eye infection that affects far more than vision. For many patients, the journey includes emotional strain, financial pressure, long treatment periods, and significant disruption to daily life. Yet these broader impacts remain largely undocumented in scientific literature.
To help close this gap, a new research project is now underway at UNSW Sydney, led by Scientia Associate Professor Nicole Carnt and conducted by researcher Dereje Anbesse. The study aims to better understand the economic, social, and psychological burden of AK from the perspectives of:
-
AK Warriors
-
Family members and caregivers
-
Eye‑care professionals involved in AK diagnosis and treatment
The AK Eye Foundation is proud to support this important work by helping disseminate the study and raising awareness within the global AK community.
Why This Study Matters
AK is often described as “life‑changing,” yet the true cost — emotional, financial, and practical — has never been fully captured. This research seeks to document:
-
The financial impact of treatment and recovery
-
The emotional and psychological toll
-
The effect on work, family life, and daily activities
-
The experiences of caregivers and clinicians
-
Barriers to care and support
Your experience may help improve future care and support for people with AK, and the research project conducted by Dereje Anbesse is designed to ensure these voices are heard.
Who Can Participate?
The research team is inviting:
-
Adults (18+) diagnosed with AK between 2015–2027
-
Family members, close supporters, or caregivers
-
Ophthalmologists, optometrists, and nurses involved in AK care
Participation involves a short screening followed by a 45‑minute online interview (Zoom or Teams). All information is confidential and managed solely by the UNSW research team.
How to Take Part

Our Commitment
The Acanthamoeba Keratitis Eye Foundation remains dedicated to supporting research that advances understanding, improves patient outcomes, and strengthens global awareness of Acanthamoeba Keratitis. By helping share this study, we aim to ensure that the lived experiences of AK Warriors and their families contribute to meaningful change in future care pathways.
