Episode on AK on Outbreak News Interviews

July 2025 –

Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) is a rare but serious eye infection caused by a microscopic parasite called Acanthamoeba. It primarily affects the cornea—the clear front surface of the eye—and can lead to severe pain, inflammation, vision loss, blindness, and even loss of the eye.

While contact lens wearers are most at risk due to water exposure, anyone can be affected.

In this episode of Outbreak News Interviews, host Robert Herriman from Infectious Disease News speaks with Juliette Vila Sinclair-Spence, Founder & Chairwoman of the Acanthamoeba Keratitis Eye Foundation, established in 2022 following her own experience with the disease.

Together, they discuss:

• What AK is
• Juliette’s personal journey
• The foundation’s mission
• How to prevent this devastating condition
